African mantis

Mantises are known for their macabre habit of cannibalism: the female often devours the male’s head and chest during mating. This still manages to complete fertilization thanks to the abdominal muscles capable of functioning even without a brain. This behavior seems to serve to ensure nourishment for the female to complete development and egg laying.
