This funny amphibian is actually a salamander that has the peculiarity of maintaining the shape of the aquatic larva even as an adult (neoteny). The large external gills allow it to breathe underwater. Only in particular environmental conditions, the Axolotl undergoes metamorphosis and turns into a terrestrial animal, taking on the typical shape of adult salamanders.
