These species secrete a powerful poison from the skin for defensive purposes. They get it from some insects they eat. Farmed specimens, such as these, are fed non-toxic insects and are therefore non-poisonous. The very showy colors are a warning to deter predators. They are called arrow frogs due to the habit of the natives of the Amazon of using them to poison the darts with which they hunt.
