Scarlet Mormons are amongst the largest Asian butterflies that can be observed in a butterfly house. The males are recognisable by the black and grey colouration on the upper side of their wings. The underside is bright red, mimicking a local poisonous species, hereby allowing the Scarlet Mormon to take advantage of this ‘bad reputation’ (Batesian mimicry). Unlike males, females have a red colouration on the upper side of their wings as well as on the underside.
