The larvas of this species feed on the leaves of citrus plants, which are very common in Tropical America. This is why this is one of the most widespread butterflies of the New World. The colouration of this species is similar to those of poisonous species of the genus Parides. The males imitate Parides species in a different way to the females. The females are recognised by their wider white spots on their front wings.
